NATIONAL DANCING
CUP WINNERS NAMED SENIOR TO SHEILA MUNRO Four national dancing chisses were decided at the Winter Show on Saturday night, and the cup winners were announced as follows: — McLennan Challenge Cup—Sheila Munro. Alec Baillie Cup, intermediate. — Margaret Jonasen. Alec Baillie Cup, junior.—Mary King. At the conclusion of the national dancing events the Show president, Mr. T. G. Johns, presented the cups won during the competition. In an appropriate manner the president referred to the late Mr. Duncan McLennan, to whose memory the McLennan Challenge Cup was dedicated. The judge, Miss Doris Shapleski, of Hastings, again demonstrated her ability in a solo Irish jig and joined with Misses Sheila Munro, Marjory Fletcher and Margaret Jonasen in a spirited reel o’ tulloch, to the accompaniment of Mrs. Esquilant. The judge drew attention to the Irish jig under 11 years on the previous night, when a special award was made to Shirley Illingworth, aged five years, who exhibited excellent talent in a strong competition with more experienced dancers. A suggestion that fancy dancing and elocutionary events be included in the next schedule was favourably received, and it was also suggested that an effort should be made to stage dancing events on .the opening light of the Show as well as on the three successive evenings.
The final night’s results were:— Sean Triubhais, under 11 years (4 entries): Mary King, 1; Joyce Miller, 2; Eunice Richie, 3. Sword Dance, 11 and under 14 years (10 entries): Margaret Jonasen, 1; Annette Shields, 2; Dorothy Fletcher, 3.
