COMBATING ESPIONAGE
NEED FOR MORE FUNDS OPINIONS OF ROOSEVELT U.S. ARMY AND NAVY (Klee. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. June 25, 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 24. President Roosevelt to-day declared that the army and navy should have additional funds with which to combat espionage in the United States. He said that the intelligence branches of both services had insufficient money to cope with what he termed a most serious situation. He was asked whether the desire for additional funds constituted counter espionage. Mr. Roosevelt replied that running down spies in America was his version of counter espionage. Mr. Roosevelt also, without mentioning a name, condemned the action of a former Government employee, who, after unearthing spy information, resigned his position in order to write newspaper articles.
