■ Referring to the trouble that was being experienced by many ot the motorists using the beach to avoid the slip at Tatapouri, the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. D. M. McGregor said to-day that drivers who charged into second gear on the third of a mile beach section were Tn difficulties immediately they attempted to change down again to low gear to negotiate the approaches. The patrol advised motorists to keep to the low gear. The beach detour was open from 2 p.m. until dark to-night, will be open again from early morning until 10 a.m. to-morrow and from 4 p.m. until dark. No traffic was allowed on the route during the hours of darkness. The power lines were taken down off the hillside an® connected to poles spanning the slip at the side df the roadway. The telephone lines Were being taken down on to the beach and were to be carried by 'Poles placed in the sand and papa just above high water mark.
