VICTORY IN SIGHT

MATCH AT LEICESTER AUSTRALIANS’ GOOD LEAD CENTURY TO BADCOCK BOWLING ANNOYS CROWD (Elee. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 9, 10 a.m.) LONDON, May 7. The weather for the third match of the Australian cricketers’ tour, that against Leicester, was cold and dull. The wicket was in good order and the outfield fast.

The ex-New Zealander, C. S. Dempster, the Leicester captain, won the toss and elected to bat.

The Australian team was as follows: S. J. McCabe, J. H. Fingleton, W. A. Brown, C. L. Badcock, A. G. Chipperfield, A. L. Hassett, M. G. Waite, G. S. White, W. J. O’Reilly, G. L. McCormick, F. A. Ward, and R. A. Barnett.

With 'Badcock enrolled as the fifth century-maker and apparently time alone preventing Hassett from getting another, the Australians are well on their way to their third victory. While Australia’s outfield cricket was good enough to dismiss Leicester fairly cheaply, it was less impressive than the tourists’ batting.

McCormick, who has brought his total to 49 no balls, would not have deserved three wickets against sounder batting. Dempster was uncomfortable facing McCormick, who was making the ball rise sharply. Early in the game, a ball from McCormick struck Berry on the side of the head and he had to be assisted from the field, but he resumed later.

Dempster Struck by Ball

After lunch, McCormick, in his third over, struck Dempster on the leg. The crowd shouted “take him off.” In the same over, a ball struck Dempster oi. the wrist and he dropped the bat, but continued. He was bowled by the next ball, a good length delivery taking the bails. Dempster, apparently, expected a shorter one. A section of the crowd continued to cry out when McCormick’s deliveries struck the batsmen, but they were not on the leg side and not contrary to the spirit of the game.

Leicester’s innings lasted 170 minutes.

Fingleton, Badcock and Hassett battered down the Leicester attack. Badcock was persistently aggressive and was seldom troubled. Hassett, who is proving the batting discovery of this tour, gave a delightful exhibition, showing a wide range of strokes and quickness on his feet. With the exception of one lofty hit to fine leg, his display was chanceless. O’Reilly, who has not yet found a length, and Ward were uncertain. Detailed scores are:— LEICESTER First Innings. McCORMICK’S NO-BALLS COMMENT BY CRITIC (Reed. May 9, noon. LONDON, May 8. Mr. Howard Marshall, writing in the Daily Telegraph, says: “We will do cricket a disservice if we magnify McCormick’s no balls into something sensational. His bowling short is part of the run-up difficulties. I hope it will not lead to any nonsense about bodyline.

“The Australian victories over Worcester and Oxford are not significant. I have seen nothing to make me feai the Australians unduly."
