PIG DISTRICT CONTROL

GISBORNE, COAST, WAIROA NEW AREA URGED MEETING AT WIIAKATANE A recommendation that steps should be taken immediately with a view to the formation of a separate district pig council for the Matakaoa, Waiapu, Uawa, Cook, Waikohu and Wairoa counties was carried at the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty-Poverty Bay Pig Council. It was suggested that to provide finance for the working of such a district, the payment of the insurance premium on all pigs condemned should be discontinued and the present levy of 2d per pig be increased to lid per pig, but this proposal was not adopted. Mr. M. J. Scott, superintendent of the pig industry, who was present, (luestioned the advisability of removing the insurance premium at present, and considered that the idea was not a fasting solution of the difficulty. Gisborne delegates urged that until such time as" the separate district council was formed, the District Pig Council should allot £IOO for the Poverty Bay sub-council, but it was agreed to leave the amount to the executive for decision.

The meeting advocated the removal of import duties on stock foods. Inspection of Boars

A discussion took place on a proposal that a second inspection of boar progeny of pig club sows should be made at six months, and if in the opinion of the selection committee they were not suitable for service they should be desexed.' It was decided, however, to defer a decision until next meeting. A hearty vote of thanks to the supervisor, Mr. D. G. Beattie, was carried by acclamation, the mover, Mr. S. C. Spence, Thornton, referring to Mr. Beattie’s untiring efforts in the formation of pig clubs, his able advice in the purchase of suitable stock and improvements in general management. _ Gisborne and Wairoa representatives at the meeting were; —Mr. W. A. McCliskie, Manutuke; Mr. W. Doncan, Whatatutu; Mr. A. Newton, Puha; Mr. I-I. R. Chrisp, Gisborne; Mr. J. Taylor, Wairoa; Mr. L. Munro, Patutaiii. Election of Officers The following executive was elected: —Mr. D. S. Ross, To Puke; Mr. R. W. Strugnell, Tauranga; Mr. N. Carter, Taneatua; Mr. S. Jephson, Oootiki: Mr. H. R. Chrisp, Gisborne; Mr. W. E. Bowen, Te Puke; Mr. J. .Jamieson, Whakatane.

The president, Mr. Ross, reported that the first eight months of operation had been successful. Seventyone pig clubs had been formed, and the indications were that only the fringe of the work had been touched. It was estimated that from the levy of 2d per pig the national council would have a revenue of about £BIOO, which would be distributed to as many district councils as possible.
