It opens with a prologue of the Roman occtipation of a pretty spot in Sussex, then makes a big jump to the middle of the eighteenth century and records the story of the family at the great house in the village, and also of those who lived in the village inn. It is a fascinating story, for Dianna Darling’s characters are all well worth meeting. (Hodder and Stoughton.T
