Messages from Rome state that with the exception of the Osscrvatore Romano, which ignored the event, while Vatican City displayed neither flags nor garlands, the entire Italian press headlined Herr Hitler's progress to Rome, where he arrived at 8.30 p.m. at the specially-built station. King Victor Emmanuel, Signer Mussolini, Count Ciano and other grandees greeted Herr Hitler as he led his entourage from the train. All entered carriages. Amid pealing music, tossing flags, shrieking sirens and booming guns, the carriages traversed the newly-made Via Hitler through the illuminated capital. Eight hundred thousand people lined the route to the royal palace, where Hen- Hitler is to be the guest of the Italian King.

Signor Mussolini effaced himself after the welcome at the station, driving circuitously to his home. Herr Hitler passed under the gateway which Saint Paul traversed on the way to his execution. The entire progress afforded an object lesson in Roman history, the procession passing monuments ranging from structures raised by the Caesars to buildings erected yesterday. Four thousand Nazis from Germany massed at various points exclaimed over the floodlit grandeur of the Coliseum and the beauty of the floral adornments.
