A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETINGSMALL ATTENDANCE MANY BLOCKED BY SLIPS The annual meeting of Ihe Poverty Bay A. and P. Association was hold to-day, the president. Mr. J. C. Graham, being in the chair. The attendance was not large, a number of apologies being received from members who had been prevented from attending because their roads were blocked by slips.

In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the president regretted that the association could not show the same credit balance as last year, because both the rodeo and the Show failed to produce the same revenue, although they cost more to produce. The Show was spoiled by the weather. but greater support than expected was given by the public. The arrangements were perfect. Highlight of Show

"The exhibition of fat cattle was one of the highlights of the Show, not only because of the judge's opinion thai it was the best, held .in New Zealand, both in numbers and in quality, but because it offers such a good opportunity to illustrate The value of the showground as a medium for development of quality and advertisement.

'"Through the enterprise of Mr. Hair, some of these animals, and not, I understand, the first prize-winners, afterwards were taken to the Munawatu Show, and, despite tiie severe journey, were outstanding among lite exhibit's there. The publicity derived from this exhibition must claim the attention of those most interested to the high standard of this class of production in the district at the very time such production is wanted in developing the chilled beef trade.

"It is significant that, over !)() per cent of the exhibits were of the Hereford breed. This breed has been most prominent in our Shows in the stud classes for many years, and its prominent position in the fine exhibition indicates the value 1 of lire lessons taught in the show ring for further development for commercial purposes, lessons which we hope are being disseminated through all classes at the Show."

Young Farmers' Clubs

Continuing, Mr. Graham mentioned particularly the work of the ladies in developing the arts and crafts, needlework, and cooking. The Young Farmers' Club movement was progressing in a striking manner, and the A. and' P. Association should foster the movement as much as possible. The movement was doing remarkably good work and he congratulated all the local clubs on their activities. c

The last Show proved that the ground was on soil second to none for the purpose, for the ground stood up very well to the stress of traffic in such wet weather. However, the association must take in hand the metalling of the roads to the principal points on the ground so that heavy motor traffic could do its work in the worst of weather.

Mr. R. W. Coop congratulated the president on the work- lie had done for the association, and expressed thanks to the patron, Mr. H. G. Tucker, for the part he had played in the development of the showgrounds. Mr. ,f. Eivers, a past president, said that the work of the secretary, Mr. W. E. Chamberlain, was greatly appreciated, and he was sure the association could secure no better secretary.

The following officers were elected unopposed:—President, Mr. J. C. Graham; vice-president, Mr. Roland Graham; treasurer. Mr. F. Tolerton: committee, Messrs'. D. J. Cumming, L. Field, C. Gaukrodger, R, F. Holden, R. F. Hutchinson, R. C. Parker, W. W. Smith and L. G. Woodward: auditor, Mr. 11. E. Dodd.

Mr. W.. Allen, a member of the committee for a number of years who has retired from active executive work, was elected a life member-, in moving in this direction, the president pointed to the long service Mr. Allen had given the society; Mr. Allen had grown old in the service of the association, having supported it for nearly GO years, having been first an exhibitor at the third Show held in Gisborne. Gisborne.
