Before going to Waipukurau. Mr. Carpenter was prominent as a newspaperman. He began his journalistic career with the Wairarapa Daily Times and later spent some years on newspapers in Taranaki. He worked at different times for the New Zealand Herald and the Auckland Star, and was editor at various times af, the Auckland Graphic, Pahiatua Herald, and Waipukurau Press.
