NEW SHIPS AUTHORISED
TOTAL OF 135,000 TONS NAVY OF AMERICA (Reed. May 3, 10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 4. The Senate has approved of President Roosevelt's £231,200,000 naval expansion programme designed to give the United States the largest navy in its history. The bill authorises the construction of battleships with a total tonnage of 135,000. The programme merely authorises the construction. Appropriations must be made later for the actual building of the vessels.
