While cranking his car in Hamilton, Mr. Victor Lynds, aged 40, of Matangi, collapsed and died. Mr. Lynds, who was a married man, had been living in the district for many years, and was engaged in the carrying business. Some 30 huge slips, negotiable only on loot, bicycle, or horse, block the main road to Wairoa between Whirinaki and Tangoio. In most cases a narrow track has been cut around the outside of the slip, and it is possible, with difficulty, to pass. Hundreds of minor slips have partially fallen across the road, but the removal of these will entail little difficulty. The road from Whirinaki to Bay View is still under water, and the traveller's only means of progress is along the beach
