LEVEL CROSSING TRAGEDY
MOTORIST HIT BY TRAIN HURLED INTO THE AIR (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL. this day. Unaware of the approach of a special train from the north at 10.30 o'clock last evening, .Mr. Harold S. Raines, manager for the past 17 years of the Edendale branch of Wright, Stephenson, and Company, while driving a car across the level crossing at Edendale, was struck by the engine and killed instantly.
Mr. Raines was "the only occupant. of the car which was thrown clear of the line, but he was hurled into the air and suffered extensive head injuries. Mr. Raines was a prominent bowler and was actively interested in eastern Southland affairs. He was 43 years of age. He leaves a widow and a family of four.
