TRUSSED WITH STRAPS

RADIO OPERATOR'S DEATH 6 GERM AN LINER TRAGEDY CAPETOWN, April 19. An inquest into the death of Johannes Stoldt. wireless operator in the German liner Pretoria, 16,632 tons, showed that he was found trussed with straps and sitting in a locked cabin. One strap acted as a ligature round Stoldt's neck and his arms were pinioned to his sides. His left hand grasped a strap which tightened the others.

A doctor said that Stoldt was unable to release himself unless the straps broke, as he could not command the keystrap. The tying was too intricate to be merely fortuitous. A brother officer said that Stoldt was very superstitious.
