HIGHER BUILDING COSTS
CONSTRUCTION OF HOMES FOUR MONTHS' AVERAGE PRIVATE CONTRACTS £943 The cost of house construction in Gisborne has increased considerably since the beginning of last year, according to an average taken out over the first four months of this and the past years. Fewer houses were authorised by the Gisborne Borough Council during the past four months, apart from the State houses, for which no permits were necessary, the number being 11, compared with 17 for the corresponding period last year, the total estimated cost being £10,375, compared with £13,462 last year. The 11 houses authorised during the past four months averaged £943 each, while those for the first four months last year averaged £796. In all building work, the estimated expenditure was greater during the past four months than in the first four months of last year, the totals being £24,616 and £22,753 respectively.
