EGMONT RACES

TO-MORROW'S FIELDS PROSPECTS REVIEWED JUMPING SEASON OPENS PRELUDE TO GREAT NORTHERNS (By "Trenton.") The opening of the Egmont Racing Club's meeting at Hawera to-morrow will mark the close of autumn racing and the opening of the jumping season. As many of the hurdlers and 'chasers claim more important engagements in the near future, their performances will be watched with interest, although the fences are by no means as difficult as in the big events at Ellerslie, Trentham and Riccarton. Betting will be on the win ajid place system. 11.45—Tongahoe Hurdles. The hurdles field is headed by that good hurdler, Donegal. He won three on end at the beginning of the season. and his recent racing on the flat should stand him in good stead. Silk Sox will also be benefited by his flat racing. Beau Gallante may require a race. Iddo is one of the most improved hurdlers in commission, and must be respected; and Artful Dodger will come into favour through his win at Waverley. Taumau beat a good field at Feilding, including Aurora'.; Love, Iddo, Artful Dodger, and Brigadore. Booklaw should hold the remainder safe. This trio may be prominent:— |

DONEGAL, IDDO, TAUMAU. 12.25—Telegraph Hack. Ohanga. Hutana, and Requiem have form to recommend them. Gold Glare, Daisy Chain and Amoroso have failed in their recent outings, but are du.> any time. Ramleh and Golden Orchid also appeal. The favourites may include: — HUTANA, REQUIEM, GOLD GLARE. I.s—Hawera Handicap. A fine field of sprinters, most of them having recent form, is due 'o face the starter in the Hawera Handicap. Lady Kyra, Majority, Mittie, Slippery "and Surella have all been winners in the past few weeks. Reipar is about due, and Johnny Wails went an excellent race at Avondale. Gay Seton, Race Boy, Dancing Lady and Davistock are by no means-out )f it. In a good 'betting race, in which there is plenty of material for a surprise, this trio may be fancied' — SURELLA, MITTIE, MAJORITY. 1.45 —Egmont Steeples. The top-weight, Tudor, has not started since he won at the Takapunn meeting at Ellerslie in November of last year, and some of the more seasoned ones are likely to be sought after. Clarion Call has not started since the 'beginning of the season, but he has been working soundly and races well when fresh. Riotous and "Huskie arc the form horses. The former won at Ellerslie and has won five, twice second and twice third in his last ten starts. Huskie was going nicely when he fell at his last start at Auckland. Don Erma, Lucidus and Royal Fire have enough form to make the race interesting. These should give a good account of themselves: —

RIOTOUS, CLARION CALL, HUSKIE. 2.2s—Hack Scurry. A big field for the Scurry will make barrier position an important factor, and good beginners like Conversion, Huntino, Daisy Chain and Gay Hunting will have an advantage. Raceline, Glenthawn and Clooneen are all likely sorts to cause a surprise. Fancies are sure to take a wide range, and this trio may be in demand in the event of Daisy Chain and Raceline starting earlier: — HUNTINO, CONVERSION. GAY HUNTING. 3.s—Meßae Cup Handicap. Catalogue and Wotan are at the top of their form, but some of those lower down may be preferred, especially if the going is heavy. Enge may not be quite ready, but Boomerang makes a strong appeal. Ned Cuttle and Lady Kyra, if reserved for this event, are, handily weighted. Silvanus reads best of the others. These should be popular fancies in the absence of Lady Kyra. BOOMERANG, NED CUTTLE, SILVANUS. 3.4s—Tawhiti Handicap. Kena and Student Prince are class hacks and Galteemore is working nicely and has .been placed at his last five " starts. Should Requiem be placed in the Telegraph Handicap earlier in the day he will be favoured. Chat has raced without much luck, and Conveyor, Thala, Bonny Glow and Cometarium are all capable of giving the top-weights some trouble. These may dispute favouritism: — STUDENT PRINCE, COMETARIUM, GALTEEMORE THE ACCEPTANCES. 11.45.
