BOWLS IN GISBORNE

BURTON CUP FINAL F. WILLIAMS’ VICTORY SECOND YEAR IN SUCCESSION The concluding matches in the Gis-borne-East Coast Bowling Centre’s Burton Cup tournament were played on the Kahutia green during the week-end, resulting in a victory for H. Gilmer, A. W. E. Bragg, W. Riddel and F. Williams (s, Gisborne). This is the second year in succession that Williams has skipped the winning rink, and in 1937 his team comprised J. S. White, W. Neal, W. Riddell and F. Williams (s).

The final was contested yesterday afternoon by Williams and Holland, and although neither team gave a particularly good exhibition of bowls Williams’ rink outplayed their opponents in |U departments of the game. In the semi-finals Williams made a brilliant recovery in his match against Armstrong, after being well behind half-way through the game. The other Semi-final game, Holland v. Stevenson, was keenly fought out right fo the last held. Details of yesterday’s play are as follow: Semi-Finals Gilmer, Bragg, Riddell, Williams , (s, Gisborne) 21 v. Henderson president of the centre, presented the cup and trophies, congratulating the successful players on their performances. •

CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS PAIRS TITLES DECIDED A feature of the centre pairs championship contests which took place on the Kahutia green during the week-end was the success of two country clubs in reaching the final, eliminating the several town clubs represented. , .. Championship play had been started on a previous weGk-end, but the opportunity of concluding the series did hot occur until yesterday. Both the champion find intermediate pairs titles were keenly contested as the Scores in the final game indicate. In the intermediate division, Forrest had two lives and to annex the title Fredericks had to defeat his opponent twice.
