RUGBY COMPETITIONS

POVERTY BAY SEASON LATE START MADE TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW The majority of the Rugby unions throughout the Dominion started their competitions last Saturday, but the Poverty Bay Rugby Union will begin the season to-morrow on the Oval. The clubs were to have taken part in a seven-a-side tournament last Saturday, but the weather caused its abandonment. There has been a distinct break in tiie weather since the end of the cricket season and a change has taken effect in the appearance of the Oval; green grass covers - the .previously somewhat parched ground and goalposts and fences divide off the three grounds. The union was unable to fill the gap made by the withdrawal of the P.W.D. team from Muriwai and as a consequence only five teams nominated for .the 'senior competition. <Vhile the series will be interrupted with a bye each week, the reduction in the number of teams has had ;he effect of strengthening the club teams, for the keener members of the old P.W.D. team have joined the remaining clubs.
