I (Herald Correspondent.) Arthur Watson Green, charged with the theft of a pipe valued at .£1 Is, the property of W. H. Flint, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment by Messrs. V. E. Winter and O. A. Jonson, J.P's. ~ The last day.of 1937 maintained the reputation of "sunny Wairoa," 82 degrees in the shade being registered for the greater part of the day. Coupled with the absence of a breeze, and„low packed clouds, the sultry conditions brought several to the verge of" prostration. The funeral of the late Mr. R. G. Deighton, brother of the manager of the Wairoa Star, brought out a large number of friends and relatives, business men and returned soldiers to pay their last respects at the graveside to the memory of one who had spent all his life in Wairoa. The Ven. Archdeacon Butterfield officiated at St. Paul's Anglican Church, and at the Wairoa cemetery. The service concluded with the sounding of the "Last Post" by Bandmaster K. L. G. Smith. The pall-bearers were Messrs. D. Byford, T. Butler, K. G. L. Smith, J. Coe, V. Brown, and C. N. Doig. A number of beautiful floral tributes covered the casket. The Waikaremoana Regatta Club's dance held in the Tuai Hall on the evening of Boxing Day concluded a very successful day. Although the hall was a little too crowded for comfort, an enjoyable evening was spent, with everyone joining in, the prevailing holiday spirit. The music was supplied by the Klick Klack Orchestra. There was a good floor and supper ,and Mr. F. H. Clark acted as M.C. Some of those present were Mesdames Clark, Sinclair, Breen, Alcock, Parry (Gisborne) ~T. Hall, Prior, Roy, Burt; Misses Keehan, Kent, Clark (Wairoa), Little, Macer, Williams, Lillian (2), Hall, Nowland (Brisbane), Mitchell, Davies (2, Wairoa), Signall (Wairoa), Pitron, Buckling (Wellington), Hinkman (Wairoa), and Trafford (Wairoa.) Mr. E. L. Cullen, MP. for Hawke's Bay, and Mrs. Cullen are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Bluck, Nuhaka Mr. and Mrs. I. Campbell, Hastings, with their son and daughter, are staying with Mrs. J. W. B. Macdoriald. Clyde road.—Miss Amy Hodgson. Wairoa, and Mr. B. Finch, a son of the Rev. N. Finch and Mrs. Finch, Campbell street, have passed in the geography section of the B.A. degree at Canterbury College. Miss M. Cairney, Christchurch, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. Dinnan, Queen street.—Mr. J. Crocker, Masterton, is staying at the residence of Miss Pilson, McLean street.—Mr. B. Dinnan, of the clerical staff of the Borough Council, is spending his holidays in Palmerston North and Morrinsville.

Visitors to Morere hot springs include Mrs. Prattley, Miss Doris Liddell, and Mr. Houseman, Waipawa. Mr. J. S. Wilson, Marine paradewest, president of the Wairoa Bowling Club, is to leave shortly for Auckland to take up a Government appointment. He is to be the guest at a farewell function at the pavilion tomorrow night. Mr. H. Staniforth, formerly of Wairoa and who returned recently from England, has taken up a post at the Awamutu Golf Club.—Dr. M. L. G. Hallwright, who is in the Wairoa Hospital, continues to make satisfactory progress from his illness.
