HASTINGS’ NEW VICAR

REV. WM. T. DRAKE SERVICES TO DIOCESE The Rev. William Tasman Drake, vicar of St. Peter’s Church, Waipawa, has been appointed vicar of St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings, to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Canon C. Mortimer-Jones, who has accepted the living of St. Mary’s Church, Waipukurau. Mr. Drake, who is well known in the diocese of Waiapu, having held various offices in the district, is expected to take up his new duties in the first week of March next.

Mr. Drake entered holy orders in 1910 when he became curate at Dunstari. Two years later he was ordained deacon and the following year lie entered the priesthood. He became vicar of Maniototo in 1914 and con-, tinued there until 1!?18 when lie a'c r cepted a curacy at Gisborne, a position he occupied for three years. Mr. Drake was then appointed vicar of Puketapu in 1921, but at the latter end of the next year he moved to St. Andrew’s parish at Port Ahuriri, where he remained until 1927, when he retired owing to ill-health. Refreshed after a two-year period, Mr. Drake was appointed organising secretary for the diocese of Waiapii in 1929 and continued in this office until September, 1931, when he accepted the living of St. Peter’s Church, Waipawa, where he had remained ever since.
