DOMINION DIFFICULTIES AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION DISCUSSION SOUGHT MINISTRY TO PAY VISIT {Elec. Tel. Copyright.—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dee. 9, 1.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Dec. 0. The Attorney-General, Mr. R. G. Menzies, announced in the House of Representatives that the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. W. White, would leave for New Zealand by the Awatea on Friday to Discuss trade relations with the New Zealand Government. It is undertsood that the sudden decision to send Mr. White to New Zealand was precipitated by the difficulties encountered by New Zealand manufacturers as a result of the introduction of the 40-hour working week. It is stated that in several important secondary industries the rise in production costs has increased the pressure of competition from Australian factories.
The possibility of tariff action by the New Zealand Government against Australian factories has been mooted several times lately and it is to discuss these difficulties in particular that Mr. White will visit Wellington. While there he will discuss also the possibilities of increasing the market for Australian citrus fruits.
