TRADE TREATY SOUGHT

FRANCE AND DOMINION ACTIVITIES OF CONSUL PROPOSALS INTENDED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Proposals are to be submitted to the New Zealand Government during the next two weeks by M. Edmond Meyer, French Consul in the Dominion, as a preparatory step to the establishment of a trade treaty between the two countries. M. Meyer said he had discussed the matter with the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, during October. Mr. Savage then indicated that the New Zealand Government was favourably disposed toward the completion of such an agreement. M. Meyer stated that his Government was anxious to secure a trade treaty with the Dominion. He had been very surprised to learn of the recent agreement between New Zealand and Germany and considered that a similar treaty could be made with his country. M. Meyer said that if an agreement were arranged, his Government would endeavour not to compete with British trade with the Dominion.
