MURIWAI NEWS

MAORI HAANGI DANCING DISPLAY (Flernld Correspondent.) Taking advantage of the Labour Day vacation, a party of friends visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ehau Tawataku. Despite the wet weather., the occasion was in the form of a Maori haangi prepared by Mr. Ehau, this being thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The dining-room was daintly decorated with masses of gaily coloured spring flowers. Much admired was the garden, where, amid the native palm trees, the brightly coloured flowers lent an air of gaiety. After luncheon the party proceeded to view the final display of Miss I. Sharpies’ pupils. Much appreciated were the exhibition ballet dance b> Valda Sutton, the tap dance by Annette Shields, and the combined tap dances by the small pupils. The evening was spent in a cards competition, the men proving superior. The prize:! were presented by Miss Eileen Ehau. Following this there was held a singing competition, the winners being Mrs. H. Phipps and Mrs. J. Rennie. Old and new songs in unison were much appreciated by the company, the conductor being Mr. Ehau. Solos were presented by Miss Ra Raihania, “Somewhere in Heaven”; Miss Sarah Ehau, “Hello Everybody"; Mr. J. Rennie, “Gipsy Love’’ and “Alma.” The subsequent hakas led by Miss Eileen Ehau and Miss Sarah Ehau were “Rio oti Huauri,” “E Pari Ra,” “Tawhito,” and “Kia Ora.” On behalf of the assembeld guests, Mrs. Phipps thanked the host and hostess for the very enjoyable evening and for the hospitality extended, remarking that tlie day would not be soon forgotten.

Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. Phipps, Mr. and Mrs, J. Rennie, Mr. and Mrs. I. Walters; Mrs. K. Wilson; Misses Ra Raihania, Audrey and Ann Walters, Eileen and Sarah Ehau;. Mr. Boydie Te Kani (Gisborne); Masters Ehau and Brian Walters.

The dancing classes held weekly at Muriwai by Miss Isobel Sharpies during the winter months concluded this week.

Miss I. Richardson, Gisborne, spent the Labour Day week-end visiting friends in Muriwai. —Mr. T. Hawke, Wairoa, has been spending a few days in the district.
