P.B. POLO CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD SUBSCRIPTIONS INCREASED SEASON OPENS OCTOBER 28 With its credit balance much reduced as a result of the outlay faced during the change-over to the new ground during the past year, the Poverty Bay Polo Club, at the anuanl meeting last evening, decided to raise the subscription rate from £2 2s to £3 3s per season. It was pointed out that the acquisition of the new ground, and the expenditure faced there, undoubtedly would help the sport, and that the temporary setback to the finances could be overcome in short order if Club members continued to support the organisation with the same loyalty as in the past. The meeting was presided over by Mr. A. Kirkpatrick, who was again elected club captain Discussion on the statement of accounts was brief, Mr. E. T. Brosnahan stating that the last year had started with a credit of £ll2, and that this had been reduced to £32 at the close of the season. The change-over had involved the club in an expenditure of £79, for ground improvements, and while most of this expenditure was justified, he thought that some of the items could have been cut down. Mr. Brosnahan held that the club must face a lowering of expenses, or alternatively agree to an increase in subscriptions. Good Outlook for Season Congratulating the executive on the comparative soundness of the finances after such a heavy outlay, Mr. C. Tietjen felt that Mr. Brosnahan's view was rather pessimistic. The new season promised to be a good one, and the players were looking forward to it with keen interest. Expenses could be reduced, and ground improvement accounts would not be recurring. The chairman agreed that the grounds had needed expenditure to equip them for play, and that most of the amounts expended in this way would not be recurring.

On the subject of the season’s play, the meeting agreed that one day’s play in each week should be the minimum, and that if Saturdays turned out wet, the following Mondays should be playing days. The official opening of the season was fixed for Thursday, October 28, and the new committee was recommended to arrange for a suitable recognition of the occasion. Official Posts Filled The club patron, Mr. R. Sherratt, was again re-elected, as was Mr. G. M. Reynolds to the post of president. Other official posts were filled as under: —Vice-presidents, Messrs, E : . M. Monckton, J. K. Murphy, C. Tietjen and E. R. Black; hon. secretary, Mr. E. T. Brosnahan; hon. treasurer and field superintendent, Mr. M. O'Donnell; non-playing committee members, Messrs. E. M. Monckton and Walker; club captain, Mr. A. Kirkpatrick; deputy-captain, Mr. J. Jobson: grounds committee, Messrs. Kirkpatrick, Monckton, Johnson and O’Donnell.

The subscription rate was raised from £2 2s to £3 3s per annum.
