The service of the new radio beacon established at Baring Head, Wellington, will begin to-day, according to a notice to mariners issued by the Marine Department. The apparatus, which will be by far the most advanced of its kind in New Zealand, will act as a wireless fog-signal and beacon. During fog or weather of poor visibility, between sunrise and sunset, the signal group will be transmitted continuously: during clear weather, between sunrise and sunset, the signal will be made half-hourly. During all weathers, at night, the signal group will be transmitted continuously. When similar stations at Cape Campbell and Stephen’s Island have been equipped they will be followed by installations on Cuvier Island and Moko Hinau Island to assist shipping entering the port of Auckland.
