TRADES COUNCIL
MONTHLY DISCUSSION WAR MATERIALS LOADING SUPPORT FOR EXECUTIVE With an attendance of 1(j delegates from unions represented in the district, the monthly meeting of the Gisborne Trades Council, held on Saturday, furnished a number of interesting subjects lor discussion. The district member, Mr. D. W. Coleman, was unable to be present owing to pressure of Parliamentary business, and was granted leave of absence. Reports from the executive and from the disputes committee were adopted. A letter from the Unemployed Workers’ Movement was read to the meeting, setting out particulars of the cases of two members of that organisation in relation to unemployment relief. The facts of these cases were considered thoroughly, and the president and secretary of the council were appointed a deputation to meet the district employment officer on behalf of the two men.
Six remits for the national conference were submitted for approval by the council, and after some discussion all were endorsed. Lengthy discussion took place on a notice of motion placed before the meeting, to the effect that a previous decision be rescinded. The motion was carried by a large majority. The decision of the national executive in respect of the loading of Japanese vessels with war materials was communicated to the meeting by letter, and received the endorsement of the Gisborne council. Matters relating to the various unions represented at the meeting were reported on by delegates, who were encouraged to give full details of all matters raised in discussion, the meeting terminating at a late hour
