GREYHOUND RACING

OWNERS' ORGANISATION NOT WITH COURSING BODY MEETING TO BE CONVENED An indication that greyhound owners in Gisborne are not unanimous in support of affiliation, through the Poverty Bay Professional Athletic and Cycling Club, with the New Zealand Coursing Association was given to-day by Mr. H. S. Hosier, secretary of the Gisborne Greyhound Owners’ Association. Mr. Hosier took issue with the writer of a letter quotations from which appeared in last night’s issue, relating to the control of dog-racing in New Zealand, and intimated that a general meeting of owners would be held in Gisborne shortly to discuss the whole position. In last night's Herald, it was stated, on the authority of Mr. H. F. Paton, secretary of the New Zealand Coursing Association, that at present the following clubs conducting dog-racing were affiliated with the association:— Waihi, Huntly, Poverty Bay. Wairarapa, Christchurch, North Otago, Dunedin, South Otago, Nightcaps, Wellington, Southland, and Metropolitan Auckland. Mr. Paton’s information indicated, too, that greyhounds raced at meetings conducted by clubs not affiliated to the association might be barred from racing under affiliated clubs. Tin Hare and Coursing Racing Regarding the clubs named as affiliated, Mi - . Hosier, on behalf of the Gisborne Greyhound Owners’ Association, stated to-day that of the 12 clubs only Metropolitan Auckland, Poverty Bay. Nightcaps and Huntly raced with tin hares, the others being either plumpton or open coursing clubs, which had been affiliated with the New Zealand Coursing Association for years. On the other hand, he added, Wellington, Dannevirke, Waipukurau, and Napier clubs had not affiliated, and three of the four, it was understood, did not intend to do so. “There are various matter to be considered in connection with the conduct of tin hare racing in Gisborne,” said Mr. Hosier, “and the Greyhound Owners’ Association feel that it would be to the interest of local owners to withhold any decision on the question of affiliation until after a special general meeting which will be held in the immediate future to discuss this rnd other matters. Information of real value will be conveyed to owners at the meeting.”

SEASON’S FIRST TRIALS DOGS IN GOOD FETTLE A large number of greyhound owners attended the tin hare trials on the Victoria Domain last evening, when some good' performances were seen for the first runs of the season. The majority of the dogs seemed to be in fine fettle and some excellent racing should be seen this coming season. It was noticed that in several instances dogs were allowed to go near the dummy hare when it was stationary and when it was being pulled round into position. The danger is that dogs becoming familiar with the nature of the lure refuse to chase the hare or fight in the course of a race.

Mr. J. Murphy has acquired a fine team and has a likely looking pair of novice dogs in Irish Comedy and All Irish, in addition to his champion, Social News. Mr. N. Davy’s team, Cocky Teims, Silk Sox and Lordly Knight, ran a good trial race, Lordly Knight just defeating Silk Sox, who seemed to show improved form. Mr. G. Nossiter had an unnamed pup which ran to within two lengths of Social News. His form will be well worth watching. The well-known competitor Golden Ranch showed a clean pair of heels to Nottus and looked as if he would prove an outstanding runner again this season, Great Gift, owned by Mr. J. Hullen, showed different form in comparison with hU display last season. He spreadeagled the field in his run last evening. Mr. B. Davis’ White Fang sprinted well in a solo run, while Mr. N. Davis’ Queen’s Choice was amongst the new competitors to the track. The last-men-tioned dog would be much keener after a few runs for live hares. Mr. B. Wallace has acquired Nico demus, which is expected' to play a prominent part in hurdling events this season. Mrs. Outen's Silver Streak was a keen runner last evening, as was Mr. E. Morrow’s Junior.
