KING OF EGYPT

BRIDE TO WEAR VEIL CONCESSION TO MOSLEMS ALEXANDRIA Sept. 22. Princess Parida, who will marry King Farouk of Egypt on October 21, will wear the Moslem i'ull veil and live the full harem life from that day. Her public drives through the streets with King Farouk, in his Rolls-Royce two-seater, will then come to an end. As Queen, she will not appear with Farouk at public official receptions. Although Farida, educated in Paris, has adopted Western modes of life and is ordering Parisian wedding gowns, it has been decided that Egyptian women are not yet sufficiently freed from Moslem tradition to permit of their Queen living the life of European Royalty. It was only after long discussions with El Maraghy, the Egyptian Moslem Primate, that King Farouk consented to Farida taking the Moslem veil. Although he himself is a strict observer of Moslem rites, Farouk has given a lead to Westernisation of his subjects. The King was convinced by the Moslem Primate, however, that a Queen who adopted Western modes of living and dress would be subjected to much criticism by vast numbers of rigidly orthodox Moslems. In the meantime the young couple —Farouk is only 18 —continue to meet daily. They motor in public, and swim together in the marble pool in Farouk's palace.
