Public Library
Sir, —As one who visits Gisborne at certain intervals and joins your public library when here, I would , like to proffer one or two observa- | tions concerning it. I-find that there is great room for improvement in (connection with the reading matter provided. The biographical works and general reference reading is, in the main, deplorably out of date and much of the other reading matter is antiquated and should be sent to the scrap-heap. The whole library wants replenishing and brought up-to-date. It may be, of course, that funds are not available, and if this is the case, then I suggest a “book-day” be held once a year. On this day citizens would be invited to purchase and donate one book to the library. You have excellent book shops here and I am assured that good discounts are given to the library when purchasing. There should be no excuse for the poor class of literature at present bulking largely in the library shelves. I find the attention given to subscribers is adequate and courteous, and I only hope the staff is adequately paid in return. —Yours, etc VISITOR.
