A six-wheeled lorry owned by Mr. J. Sloan was totally destroyed by fire while on the Papamoa Hill, north of Motu, last Friday. There were six cords of matai firewood on board and the tank held 14 gallons of benzine. Mr. Sloan discovered that a bare wire had ignited the woodwork, and ran for assistance to the roadman's camp a short distance away but when he returned the firewood had caught and was a blazing mass, and all hope of extinguishing the flames was abandoned, no sand or water being available on the rocky hillside.— Special.
