RESCUE WORK PRAISED

EFFORTS IN HARBOUR AID TO NAVAL DREW COUNCIL PAYS TRIBUTE (Per Press Association ) AUCKLAND, last night. The rescue of the naval boat's crew off Karaka Bay, St. Heliers, in which a City Council officer, Mr. C. E. Tilby participated, was commended at the Auckland City Council’s meeting tonight by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis. “Before proceeding with the business of the meeting,” said the Mayor, “I should like to refer to the conspicuous bravery shown on September 30 last by a member of the council’s staff. Inspector C. E. Tilby, of the sanitary department and a resident of St. Helier’s Bay, Mr. H. 11. Partridge, in connection with the rescuing of the crew of one of the boats which capsized in the naval race on the Auckland harbour. This is a case of giving credit where credit is due, and I feel that the council should this evening pass appropriate resolutions.

“Captain Glennie, of H.M.S. Achilles, has promised to forward to me a full report which I shall send on to the authorities with a recommendation that Mr. Tilby and Mr. Parl-

ridge should be considered for the award of the Royal Humane Society.” The following motions proposed by the Mayor were unanimously carried: — “That the council records its high appreciation of the rescue work carried out by a member of the sanitary department’s staff, Mr. Tilby, on September 30, 1937, after the capsize of one of the boats competing in the naval races on the Auckland harbour and congratulates him on the result of his endeavours, and expresses its pride in the service to others he performed on that occasion. Further, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Tilby.” “That this meeting of the City Council tenders its congratulations to Mr. Partridge on the rescue work carried out by him and records its appreciation of the same.”
