GREATER EFFICIENCY NEW STATION PROJECT £13,000 LOAN SANCTIONED In the annual report of the Gisbornc Fire Board, to be submitted to the Borough Council at to-night's meeting, the council being a contributory body to the cost of maintaining the brigade, reference is made to the.project for building a new fire station, on earthquake proof lines, at a cost of £13,000. The reference is as under:—

"During the year sanction was obtained for the raising of a loan of £13,000 for the purpose of enlarging and strengthening the fire station, and also the building of four dwellings for firemen. Approximately half an acre of land immediately behind the present station has been acquired, and this js in the process of being cleared and levelled. Plans have been prepared and tenders called, and it is expected the work will shortly be put in hand. When everything is completed, quarters for the majority of the men will be available, and conditions vastly improved for their welfare, all tending towards further efficiency." Year's Levy Totalled £2254 In other respects the report is purely formal, the personnel, the contributing bodies, and the number of meetings with comparative attendances being indicated. The levy to meet the expenditure for the year ended on March 31, 1937, was £2254, of which £75 was borne by the Government, and the balance divided between the Borough Council on the one hand, and the group of interested insurance companies on the other, the council's contribution being £IOB9 12s 6d. In the statement of accounts, the above figures are shown together with miscellaneous receipts totalling £59 Bs, while the payments for the year included £999 for wages, retainers, auxiliary staff payments, fire pay, and boot allowances, service grants, recreation grants, and registration and license fees. Repairs, maintenance and renewal of plant consumed £2ll, telephones and insurances £203, and administrative expenses ran to £204, including £B7 18s 7d paid in legal expenses. Interest and principal paid on purchases of land and equipment took a further £sll 13s Bd, and the balance of receipts over expenditure totalled £292 4s 3d. Liabilities on the board include £865 owing on land purchases, and £lO4 to sundry creditors. The capital account now stands at £9066, and the revenue account at £330. On the assets side are shown real estate valued at £3710, fire station buildings £2200, plant, uniforms, furniture £3600, and other items bringing the total of assets up to £10,356.
