(Herald Correspondent.) “Great weather for ducks and daffodils” is the general verdict in Wairoa regarding the weather, which has been wet off and on for some days. Incidentally, it has, really, been good for daffodils; for the display of the golden blooms exceeds anything that Wairoa has experienced for many years. The district schools of the county resumed work to-day after the shortened second term holidays. The monthly meeting of the Wairoa County Council will be held on Wednesday. Wairoa listeners-in had good radio reception from Christchurch on Saturday of the second test football match, South Africa v. New Zealand. A Wairoa resident, driving a car from Napier to Wairoa, had an unenviable experience during the recent blockage of the Napier-Wairoa road •at the Waikare Gorge. The Public Works Department’s men were engaged in blasting some huge rocks to make them small enough to be heaved off the road, and the car was parked at an apparently safe distance, but tho explosion sent good sized masses of stone high into the air and one of them tore a hole in the roof of the car. However, no one was injured. Mr. and Mrs. McArdle, Whakamahia station, who have been on a holiday in Australia, returned on Friday.— Canon Watson, formerly vicar of Wairoa, is expected to visit here shortly while on a tour. —Mr. A. C. Twyford, the Wairoa traffic inspector, who has been ill for several days, was on duty again on Friday. The funeral of the late Mrs. R. Cram took place at the Wairoa Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a number of settlers. The Rev. Father Doherty officiated at St. Peter’s Church and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Bob and Jack Cram, Rex. Mayo, G. McGregor, Clyde Hill and M. Kirwan. Mrs. Davys. Clyde road, left on Saturday for Auckland in connection with the accident sustained by her daughter. Miss Dot Davys, in the city the previous, night.
