CREDIT BY FRAUD
TRAVELLER SENTENCED ARRESTED IX (.TSBORNE On two charges ot obtaining credit by fraud and one of stealing a pair of gioves, a commercial traveller, Landon Powell-Phelps, aged l>t>, was sentenced to 12 months' probation by Messrs. A. G. Beere and .1. B. Broadhurst, J.P.. in the Police Court today. The accused pleaded guilty lo the three charges. Detective A. G. McWhirtcr stated that (lie accused stayed two nights at the Masonic Hotel. Tauranga, and left without paying his bill, and the same thing occurred at Whakatane, where he stayed one night, leaving on Wednesday after saying he would be back for lunch. The gloves were taken from a car in the hotel yard. The accused had never been brought before the court before, the detective added, and his wife was in poor health. The offences were of a very mean type, and the man was making no endeavour to pay his way. but he said now that he would be able to pay the money very soon. "I did not realise that I was acting in an illegal manner," the accused said, "but I realise now how silly 1 have been, and nothing like thai will ever occur again."
When placing him on probation foi 12 months, the justices gave the accused a week in which to pay Ihc debts incurred.
