BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD TALK ON RADIATION There was a large attendance of members at the fourth meeting of the Young Businessmen’s Club, held last evening, and after the installation of Dr. A. L. Singer as chairman the first annual meeting was proceeded with. The speaker for the evening was Mr. 11. Berkley Tyerman, who took as his subject “Radiation.” During his talk lie explained how light was waves of varying length, and held his audience in wrapt attention. Practically all the known rays were dealt with, and Mr. Tyerman outlined how X-rays were used in photography and why it was that the infra-red rays penetrated haze and mist. Perhaps the most interesting part of the address was the explanation of gama rays, which were given off by radium. As far as was known redium broke down in seven stages and took 2800 years before, it reached the final stage of lead. It was incredible, he said, the speed with which the particles left radium and one kind, for simplicity called “A” particles, were estimated to travel at the terriffic pace of 10,000 miles per second. The last rays to be dealt with were radio waves, the longest of all waves.

At the conclusion of his address the speaker was literally bombarded with questions, which continued even after the meeting was brought to a close. A vote of thanks to the speaker was passed, on the motion of Mr. C. Johns.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Dr. A. L. Singer; vice-president, Mr. L. W. Anderson; secretary, Mr. Stan R. Vincent; treasurer, Mr. C. Allen; committee, Messrs. S. 11. Hill, T. Wauchop, A. DeCosta, T. White, J. Bain, C. Johns, and A, M. Terry.
