WAIRAKEI TO TAUPO
HIGHWAY improvements
GOOD PROGRESS MADE
Excellent work is being carried out by the Public Works Department in improving the section of the Rotoruai'aupo main highway between Wairakei .and Taupo. Before the next summer season the completion of the widening will remove the last of the most dangerous sections of this highway, which carries a heavy traffic load. ' • . ; -
In the vicinity of the Huka Falls the road was previously narrow and winding,'but now many of the corners have been cut away and the spoil has been used to increase the width, particularly on the bends, where the road surface is being graded in toward the inner bank.
Work is hlso proceeding on a section of the route about 17 miles from Taupo, which previously was of a sandy nature and low-lying, resulting in flooding during heavy rain. The surface pf this stretch of about two miles has how been built up and the width in places is about 40ft. already. About 14 miles of the route from Rotorua has been sealed in addition to the sealing■» from Taupo to the Waikato River bridge; and it is probable that this Will .be extended from both ends In the near future.
