LONG PUBLIC SERVICE
ASHBURTON MAN PASSES MR, F. W r . WATT (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. The death of Mr. Frederick William Watt, one of the most prominent public men in the county, has occurred.
He was born in Wellington in 1877, and came to Ashburton as a child. He was one of the promoters and first chairman of the Ashburton Power Board, holding the office for 21 years. He was an ex-member and exchairman of the Ashburton Hospital Board, and was responsible for many
improvements and advances. He was an ex-member of the Ashburton Borough Council, serving for several years and being the chairman of the drainage committee when the sewerage scheme was installed. He was a Past Master of the New Zealand branch of the Manchester Unit of Oddfellows. An outstanding service of his to the order was the drafting of the legislation by which members on service in the Great War received benefits involving £30,000. Mr. Watt was also a prominent Freemason. He leaves a widow, one- son and three daughters.
