WAIROA HOSPITAL

HOUSING OF STAFF TWO LET (Iltnaid Coi respondent.) At the Wairoa Hospital Board's meeting m Wairoa yesterday afternoon the tender;; for building a cottage for the hospital maids, and for additions to the nurses’ home—the housing of the nursing staff being an urgent problem for some time—were dealt with. Prior to the opening of the tenders the local architect attended the meeting and added to his original estimates the increases rendered necessary by the requirements of the Health Department, and which had been already made known to the intending tenderers. Mr. 11. L. Harker said that with 55 patients in the institution it wasj essential that the work should be done as quickly as possible, and it ; would pay the board to offer an in- ; ducement to bring this about. The ; contract time was 10 weeks and he ; moved that a compensatory clause be ; added to provide for the payment ; of £2 10s per day-week for every day ; the work was completed within the ; specified time, and per contra that ; the penalty for being over the time ; should be strictly enforced. —This was ; carried. ; The tenders were then opened, there ; being only three for the cottage for < the maids, and one for the nurses' home. After consideration, and subject , to the consent of the Minister, the tender of Messrs. Sharpe and Telford, North Clyde, for the cottage at £1419 was accepted, and that of Messrs. W. Hedley and Company, Mitchell road, Wairoa, for the nurses’ home additions, £1625. The department is to be asked to hasten the completion of the matter, tiie need -for the increased accommodation being urgent.
