LOST AMERICAN FLYERS

FLEET OF 63 PLANES HONOLULU, July 12. The 63 seaplanes of the United States naval carrier were checked, fuelled and assembled in position for a dawn take-off yesterday to search for the missing American flyers, Mrs. Amelia Earhart Putnam and Captain F. J. Noonan. Sudden rain squalls limited the'visibility, but the searchers were determined to make a tremendous final effort to locate the missing plane. The Navy Department is seeking permission from Britain to search in the vicinity of the Gilbert Islands, to which area the coastguard cutter Itasca and the mine-sweeper Swan are steaming. The New York World-Telegram, in an editorial, suggests that many calls, ostensibly from Mrs. Putnam, are not authentic. It adds that the suspicion seems to be justified that one or more persons deliberately sent out fake calls and that the exposure of "the dangerous fools” responsible will be of great service.
