“JUST TO DO AND PAY”
EXTRA HOSPITAL LEVY 40-HOUR WEEK RESULTS “It seems to be a case of it is not ours to reason why but just to do and pay,” said the deputy-Mayor, Mr. H. Holmes, who presided at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. A letter was read from the Coojc Hospital Board making a demand for an additional contribution of £194 to meet the cost of the introduction of the 40-hour week for the domestic staff and other alterations at the request of the Health Department. The deputy-Mayor said it was a pity that the additional demand had not been made before the council had prepared its estimates.
