To-tlay’s North Islam! Report Blue skies were reported this morning at Napier, East Cape, and Opotiki, but overcast conditions prevailed elsewhere in the North Island, with rain fairly general. Light north-westerly breezes were reported at Auckland and light to moderate southerlies elsewhere. The barometer had commenced to rise again. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland and Napier 50 degrees, Tauranga 51, Opotiki and East Cape 53, Gisborne 48, and Wellington 44. Rough seas were reported at Wellington: elsewhere moderate or smooth. Last Night’s Forecast The recent depression has passed south-eastwards of the South Island, but a secondary depression has been centred over the Cook Strait area to-day. An intense anticyclone covers Australia and the western Tasman Sea. The forecast is for winds, southwesterly to southerly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and freshening at times on parts of the east coast, but later decreasing gradually. Seas in New Zealand waters will be rough north of Farewell Spit and about Foveaux Strait, rising south of East Cape; elsewhere, moderate. In the eastern Tasman there will be moderate to strong but gradually decreasing southerly winds. Seas v ill be rather rough, but moderating, j lie weather will be cold and changeable and somewhat squally, with passing showers in most districts with snow on the high levels of the Solid) Island. Conditions will improve later from the westward. Midday Forecast General inference. —Though the principal depression passed eastward yesterday, a shallow one is si ill located over the North Island this morning, while a series of slight secondaries continues to pass in the south. An anticyclone covers the Tasman Sea. however, and is gradually moving on to the Dominion. Forecast. —Moderate to strong southerly winds. Weather cold and changeable, witli passing showers at many places, especially north of Hawke’s Bay. Seas rather rough to rough.
