SPRINGBOK MATCH TALK

POVERTY BAY UNION APPARENT MISAPPREHENSION BAY OF PLENTY ATTITUDE “Like the East Coast, my union now considers that the proposed trial match should bo cut out and will make arrangements accordingly,” wrote the secretary of the Bay of Plenty union, Mr. W. S. Henderson, in a letter received last evening by the management committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union. “The selectors will have ample opportunity of seeing the players in action in the series of inter-union games, and that should suffice.” In connection with the series of trial games it was stated that two of the Bay of Plenty selectors, Messrs. G. Peebles and S. Emery, would be attending the Poverty Bav-Ehst Coast fixture at Wai-o-matatini on July 17. A letter in the outward correspondence, read by the secretary, Mr. W. S. McKee, pointed out that the match was not a trial one between the combined team and the rest of Poverty Bay, and would be merely in the nature of a practice. The Poverty Bay union was not pressing the matter, yet it thought the game a necessary one in the programme. It was further explained that the Poverty Bay and East Coast unions had only one selector each, and that only one would bo required from the Bay of Plenty. The reply of the secretary was confirmed.

An application was received from the Maori Returned Soldiers’ Club, Te Araroa, for 45 or 50 seats on the main stand for the Springboks match in Gisborne.—'The letter was deferred until the next meeting.

In regard to the application for a third grade fixture with Opotiki. the Opotiki union wrote that n definite date was impossible, but that a communication would bo made later in the season with Poverty Bay.—The letter was received. Temporary Stand

Advice was received from the Now Zealand Rugby Union to proceed witli No. 2 proposal in connection witli the temporary grandstand for the Springboks’ fixture in Gisborne. The chairman, Mr. G. 11. Sceats, explained that the No. 2 proposal was similar to that which was in operation for the match in Gisborne against the British team. The successful tenderer erected the stand and took all responsibility, removing the seating accommodation after the match. The temporary stand sub-committee was authorised to proceed witli the contract approved bv the New Zealand union.

The chairman reported that the finance committee had considered the grant for school Rugby and forwarded a recommendation that a grant of £lO be made to the Poverty Bay Primary Schools’ Sports Association to dispense as it thought fit. It was decided to accede to the recommendation on the motion of Mr. J. E. Mercer, seconded by Mr. E. T. Brosnahan.

Mr. N. Tasker was appointed manager of the representative team to play on Saturday at Wai-o-mala-tini. The chairman said that the selectors would be conferring after the match, and Mr. G. J. Jeuno was appointed to attend the conference on behalf of the Poverty Bay union. Mr. Scents was appointed to travel witli the colts’ team as manager on tlie trip to Whatatutu on Saturday.

Saturday’s Local Games

On account of the absence of the Poverty Bay senior and colts representative teams from the district on Saturday next and only the minor grade games to ofTer the public, it was decided to alter the charge of admission to the Oval to a flat rate of (id.

It was explained that the final round of the senior competition had started last week, and with that had commenced also the competition for the Premier Cup, donated by Mr. O. S. Burl. It was considered that the additional interest provided by the final round cup series would sustain the interest in the senior grade for one or two of those teams not in the running for the championship. A Waiinana dub player. Green, was granted a transfer to the Celtic club. Fixtures for Saturday Following is the draw for Saturday, nil games to be played at the Oval:— Junior grade.—ll.S.O.B. v.
