ARMED GUARDS IN PARIS
RESTAURANT EMPLOYEES STRIKE ORDER IGNORED CLASH BEFORE HOTEL (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. July 12, 2.3 Q p.m.) PARIS, July 11. In order to prevent the strike by the employees of hotels, restaurants and cafes, who are demanding a working week of five days, paralysing the restaurants, the Government has provided for all working employees steelhelmeted and carbine-armed mobile guards who have picketed the cafes and prevented interference with customers. The day was without incident except for the dispersal of a crowd before an hotel at the Gare Saint Lazare terminus, where 15 persons were arrested.
Only 6000 of 40,000 restaurant workers obeyed the union’s order to strike.
