COLLAPSE OF COMPOSER
DEATH IN PRIME OF LIFE NOTED FILMLAND FIGURE GEORGE GERSHWIN PASSES (Klee. Tel. Copyright—Uni led Press Assn.) (Reed. July 12, 3 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, July 11. George Gershwin, aged 38 years, died in hospital five hours after an operation for the removal of a tumor on the brain. Although Dr. Dandy, the John Hopkins brain specialist, was hurrying here by aeroplane from Maryland, two local surgeons were forced to operate before his arrival when the composer’s condition became critical.
Mr. Gershwin collapsed two weeks ago in the Samuel Goldwyn studios while preparing nine compositions for the Goldwyn Follies cinema, live of which he had completed. The news of his death shocked United States musical circles and many statements of sorrow pointing out that he died in the prime of life and at the peak of his career.
