THE WEATHER To-day’s North Island Report Overcast conditions prevailed throughout the North Island this morning and light to moderate northerly breezes were general. The barometer had fallen steadily since yesterday. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland 54 degrees, Tauranga 50, Opotiki 53, East Cape 57, Gisborne 44, Napier 55, and Wellington 51. A rather intense depression, apparently the last of the present series, is advancing on to the Dominion from the Tasman Sea. Pressure has risen considerably over south-eastern Australia. An intensive anticyclone is centred near Adelaide. The forecast is for winds, moderate to strong northerly to westerly, of gale force at times about and south of Cook Strait, backing to southerly to-night in the far south, and southerlies or south-westei - lies extending over the Dominiqn within the next 24 to 3G hours. Seas in New Zealand waters will be rough south of Cape Egmont and in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas, rather rough north of Cape Egmont, elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising south of Castlepoint. In the eastern Tasman Sea there will be strong north-west to west winds, of gale force in the southern half, but southwesterlies soon setting in there and becoming general 'during Tuesday. Seas will be rough. The weather will be fair at first in Eastern coastal areas, but otherwise changeable and squally. Intermittent rain is probable in districts with a westerly aspect, with some heavy falls from Taranaki southwards. Later rain will extend to eastern areas. General inference. —A rather deep depression crossed the South Island last night and a secondary was centred this morning over the Cook Strait area. An intense anticyclone covers Australia and is extending on to tiie Tasman Sea.

Forecast. —Moderate to strong northerly to westerly winds, backing later to south-westerly. Weather cold and changeable, with scattered rain. Seas moderate, but later rising.
