CHESS CLUB NOTES
TELEGRAPHIC -MATCH The Gisborne-IJamilton telegraphic chess match for the Blackburn Cup has been arranged to commence next Saturday evening. Hamilton, who have a particularly strong provincial team, are the present holders of this coveted trophy. However, the Gisborne team is much improved in strength this year, and it is anticipated that an even struggle will ensue. The local players are very optimistic and are looking forward to the match with considerable keenness.
During the past week several tournament games were played, the results being as follow: —In the scaled handicap. Venning defeated Pore and Jensen, while Aitken, sen., lost to Jensen and Peru. In the telegraphic match challenges, Robinson beat Thompson: Ritchie defeated Somervell and Fischbaeh; while the latter also lost to Meredith.
