Makaraka-Matawhero W.I.

There was a small attendance of members at the meeting of the Maka-raka-Matawhero Women’s Institute, held on Wednesday, Mrs. Livingston taking the chair in the absence of Mrs. Lange. Mesdames Badham and Rennie received the good wishes of the meeting for a speedy recovery from illness. Following an interesting account of the recent council meeting, given by Mrs. Cornelius, a discussion arose on the raising of subscriptions for one year to enable an endowment fund to be started with the surplus. The matter will be taken up again at a later meeting. Members were very interested in a display and demonstration of flowers made from wood pulp, Mrs. Wise, a local member, showing a simple method to attain effective work with the fibre. It was announced that the gardening circle would meet at the home of Mrs. Campbell on July 28. A competition for odds and ends of wool was won by Mrs. S. Jackson and Mrs. Fulton with a tea cosy. Other awards were:—Chocolate sponge (1 entry).—Mrs. Edwards, 1; Turkish delight (1 entry).—Miss A. Spralt, 1. Green tomato pickle (3 entries).—Miss E. Toole, 1. Bootees (5 entries).—Miss E. Toole, 1; Mrs. Edwards, 2. After making final arrangements for the exhibition of work, the meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
