July 8, 11.30 a.m.) LEICESTER, July 7. Securing the first use of an excellent wicket, Leicester made a wonderful start in their match against the New Zealand cricketers, putting on 439 runs for the loss of only three wickets.

The New Zealand team was as follows:—Vivian, Moloney, .Wallace, Kerr, Hadlee, Lamason, Tindill, Donnelly, Cowie, Gallichan, and Roberts. Ber-y and Prentice established a record first-wicket partnership against New Zealand in England, scoring 265 together and beating the HobbsSutcliffe score at Scarborough in 1931, when they both also scored centuries. Berry and Prentice also made the record stand of the present tour, eclipsing. Hammond, and Hardstaff’s score of .245 in .the test.

Conditions were overwhelmingly in favour of the batsmen.. The wicket was the easiest imaginable, and the outfield was exceptionally fast. Moreover, the luck" Whs against, the tourists. Berry early played . Roberts against his stumps without removing the bail, and thrice survived leg before appeals by Cowie. Batting Not Enterprising Nevertheless, the batting was not enterprising, although the score quickened after lunch till the dismissal of the first pair, when it slackened so much that the players often were barracked.

At lunch, the score was none for 104.

The New Zealand bowling was uniformly steady, and the fielding was enthusiastic. Tindill did not concede a bye until well into the afternoon. The score at tea was 293 for two wickets. The attendance was about 1000. A good crowd probably will attend tomorrow, which is a half-holiday in Leicester.

A novelty to-day was the playing of popular airs over loud speakers to entertaiiv the ' spectators during the intervals!

The New Zealanders were the guests at lunch of Sir Frederick Oliver, president of the Leicestershire club. Tomorrow evening the team will attend a flying exhibition at the invitation of Mr. Lindsay Everald, at his private aerodrome at Ratcliffe.
