GUNBOAT SUNK
SOVIET SHIP OF WAR MANCHUKUAN INCIDENT REPLY TO AGGRESSION HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE (Elec. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) (Reed. July 1, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 30. It is reported that a Soviet gunboat was sunk by Japanese-Manchukuan gunfire on the Amur River with heavy loss of life. A communique states that three Soviet gunboats opened fire on the Japanese-Manchukuan forces which were obliged to retaliate, sinking one and damaging another, and forcing a third to retirp. Manchukuo has protested to the Soviet authorities. A Moscow report says it is uncertain there whether the gunboat incident occurred before the agreement to withdraw the forces was reached. A Moscow communique states that both parties had undertaken to ensure that the' situation would not be! complicated by unexpected actions. The Japanese Ambassador at Moscow stated that while a refusal of the Russians to withdraw might not mean war he was sure that the Soviet would comply. Rumours that 10 Russian vessels are converging on Sennufu Island are not confirmed.
