VON NEURATH’S VISIT MAY SHOW RESULTS LONDON, June 10. The German Foreign Minister, Baron von Neurath, has arrived at Sofia • (Bulgaria) from Belgrade (Yugoslavia). An official Yugoslav communique states: “An exchange of views revealed an identity of outlook on the political situation.” The Daily Mail says: “It is understood that Germany previously sought Yugoslav adherence to the RomeBerlin group, and designed to include Hungary, Bulgaria, and Greece, but, after the conversations of Prince Paul, of Yugoslavia, in London during the Coronation period this plan was negatived by Yugoslavia. The talks which Baron von Neurath is about to have with King Boris of Bulgaria are likely to be more decisive. Baron von Neurath’s visit is seen to be part of a diplomatic tug-of-war between the Berlin-Rome ‘axis’ and London and Paris for influence in the Danube Valley and the Balkans.” The Daily Telegraph Paris correspondent suggests that France is suspicious of the communique, and that as long as ambiguity continues, the French Government is unlikely to renew the treaty providing for diplomatic co-operation with Yugoslavia which expires in the near future. The French Press is withholding comment.
