FEWER BUILDING PERMITS
INCREASE IN VALUE NEARLY 40 PER CENT UP FIGURES FOR HALF-YEAR Fewer building permits were issued by the Gisborne Borough Council during the past six months than during the first half of 1936, but there was an increase of nearly 40 per cent in the estimated cost, of the work for which sanction was' given.
For the six months ended yesterday, 99 permits were issued, compared with 105 during the corresponding period last year, but the estimated cost rose to £39,583 from £28,819, an increase of £10,764. June figures were 15 permits and £9742 in cost last month, against 22 permits and £7246 a year ago. Erection of Dwellings The construction of dwellings has been going on at much the same rate as during the first half of 1936, the number of permits issued during- the past six months being 21, or one fewer than in the January-June period last year. The total value of the work was £17,346, against £16,236 a year ago, an increase of £lllO. The average cost of dwellings authorised during the first half of this year was £826, compared with £738 a year ago.
Last month, permits were issued for • ' two dwellings at a total estimated cost •! of £2056, with six permits for alterations and additions at £615. Only one new business premises was authorised, this being Government work at £6695, while six alterations and additions were estimated at £376.
